New member. Greetings.
I hope this isn't too much for a first post. I've already posted it elsewhere, but I think it might be appreciated here.

Here's my idea of quintessential metal albums...

Lots of images within.Collapse )

Yeah, a lot of these bands suck now. Metallica, Megadeth, even Morbid Angel (since David Vincent's exit) and Slayer. Opeth haven't really done anything as good as My Arms, Your Hearse, and Damnation isn't exactly a ray of hope. Sepultura went down the tubes after Max Cavalera smoked too much pot and left to form the terrible Soulfly. Emperor have broken up and the remaining members went on to play in the inferior Zyklon. I needn't comment on Sabbath, 'cause well, suffice to say I'm not a Dio fan and look at Ozzy now. Several of the best have died -- Cliff Burton, Chuck Schuldiner, and now Quorthon (not that his recent output was spectacular). All of the above are quite likely the very reasons people are constantly heralding the death of heavy metal.

Newer albums like The Sham Mirrors by Arcturus, a band (formerly) fronted by Ulver's Garm (aka Trickster G.) show that metal still has plenty of life in it. Sunn O))) cross over from doom metal into the realm of noise, drone, "power ambient" -- Flight of the Behemoth benefits from assistance by Merzbow. Ulver have stretched beyond metal into experimental fields of noise, ambient, and neo-classical. Metal is perhaps a greater cesspool of creativity now than ever before.

Still, the above albums remain (in my opinion) the cream of the crop.

Please feel free to comment, criticize, and add your own favorites as you see fit!

Metal is elegance...
In a culture such as this one, which pleases to consider itself as an elite, I believe there is no place for blasphemies such as the usage of diverse deformation of this already bastardised langage tjhat is english such as "tr00" and "kvlt". I suggest that such langage should be hereby banned from this community, even though they have not yet had the chance te have been used, as this community has barely seen the lights of night. The beauty in the purity and nobility of a langage well written shall be preserved by those who will prove themselves worthy of appartenance to this community I hope. I hope this community will be used as a forum for discussion on the philosophy of those who adopted extreme metal as they reason to keep on living in a world such as the one we live in today.
